Perez apologizes to Hamilton for assisting Max Verstappen in winning the Formula One world championship.

Fernando Alonso has apologized to Lewis Hamilton for his actions at Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which included assisting Red Bull colleague Max Verstappen.

Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen won the Formula One World Championship in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, and Sergio Perez has expressed his regret to Hamilton.

After edging off Verstappen to take the lead on the first lap, Hamilton was the guy who controlled the race from the front for the bulk of Sunday's season finale. However, he found himself in an unusual duel with Perez halfway through the event.

After leaving the circuit as Hamilton and Verstappen were still in the pits, the Mexican snatched the lead again and raced away from Hamilton to recover the lead and restore the number one position. He did so by emerging far faster than his Dutch competitor.

What the seven-time world champion did not foresee was a duel with Perez, who put in a spectacular defensive performance to hold Hamilton behind the wheel for as long as possible, enabling his title-chasing colleague to make up important time on the road to the championship.

After successfully holding off the Mercedes driver, Perez was applauded by Verstappen and the rest of the Red Bull squad, with the latter referring to him as a 'legend' over the team's radio system afterward.

The Mexican did, however, express some compassion for Hamilton after his spectacular performance on DAZN, and even he expressed regret for his role in the epic championship race that was broadcast on the network.

At the end of the day, Perez remarked, "Hurting someone in a world championship is something you don't want to do, but I had to do it for my team."

"I am certain that Hamilton himself will get the significance of what I am saying. " I've gone above and beyond for Max and my staff as a result.

In these situations, life has placed you in a position where you must perform for someone else's benefit.

With only six laps left in the race, the safety car was deployed after an incident involving the lowly Nicholas Latifi, and Verstappen was able to capitalize on it to take the victory.

This further congested the field, allowing the Dutchman to close the gap on Hamilton, which he finally took advantage of after the duo battled it out in a contentious one-lap shoot-out to determine the world championship on the last lap.

In spite of the safety car, Perez feels that the Englishman's race would have been straightforward if it hadn't been for his defensive efforts early in the event.

"At the end of the day, I was able to assist him, and that was crucial. Because of the windows, I believe that the 10 seconds or so that Hamilton lost were the ones that decided the race.

"If he hadn't helped out in all of the windows, he could have done it in the safety vehicle instead. My plan was to pull over, and Lewis would have had an easier time of it."

In spite of a streak of strong performances this season, the Mexican has undoubtedly been overshadowed by teammate Max Verstappen. However, the Mexican is certain that he has what it takes to be the team's primary driver.

"I believe a decision will be made shortly on the matter. This is a challenge I believe I am capable of handling well. When it came to speed, I was up to the challenge.

My performance has improved significantly in the previous several races. I believe I have the highest chance of success if I start from scratch.

It's hoped that next year's automobile will be even better than this year's.
